Kodanad

Located in the picturesque valleys of the Nilgiris, Kodanad Tea Estate is one of the best known tea plantations in the fabled Blue Mountains area. The estate has been producing high quality clonal and orange pekoe varieties of tea since 1868. Situated at an altitude of approx. 6,500 feet above sea level on the easternmost ridges of the Nilgiris, the estate provides breathtaking views and vistas. Kodanad is the largest tea garden in the Kotagiri Taluk.

Since the early 90s, the estate has been shrouded in political mystery. In the mid 70s, the estate was purchased by an English family that relocated to the region. The early 90s saw the estate increase its yield and the future looked bright. However, around this time, a prominent political figure in the area took a liking to the estate. The tranquil setting provided for a perfect getaway from the day to day rigor of Indian politics! There was an interest in procuring the estate and due to financial pressures, the family chose to sell a portion of the 906 acres that comprised the estate. There were subsequent negotiations, and allegedly the family was forced to sell the entire estate due to political pressure.

Regardless of its checkered past, the produce of the estate continues to be top quality!
